Laurie Broderick-Burr has been a movement educator for over 30 years.  As a total body nerd, Laurie considers herself a life-long learner and consistently seeks to deepen her knowledge of human movement. She holds a BA in dance and an MS in Kinesiology with specialties in orthopedic rehabilitation and geriatric exercise science, allowing her to expertly integrate principles of anatomy, biomechanics, motor learning, pain science, and a functional approach to movement training.
What does  the “ME” in “mewithlauriebb” signify?”  “ME” stands for Movement Essentials.  Movement is essential to overall well being.  Period. Humans were made to move.  How we move, how we think about ourselves moving, what we love to do to move, where our fears or concerns about movement arise is all part of what Laurie uses to quantify “movement essentials”.  It’s not necessarily about moving “right”, but  about exploring movement and our relationship to it, whether it’s asana, strength training, balance work, walking, running, hiking, jumping, rolling, bending, turning…..movement and trusting in our ability to move is really where it is.
Laurie approaches working with her students and clients with a “whole person” (body, mind, and spirit) strategy, which necessitates an understanding founded both in evidence-based science and experience, sprinkled with humor and understanding.  This biopsychosocial approach requires a scientific understanding of the various body regions and systems coupled with supporting an individual’s thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors to ignite change and well being.
Ultimately, it’s about helping a student or client trust in their own capacity to make choices that work for them in this exact moment, understanding that we are constantly changing and being challenged by new movement situations.
Having recently retired from teaching at the college level, where she taught dance, fitness, yoga, and lifestyle courses for 30 years spending time at UCSC, Cabrillo College, and Evergreen Community College, Laurie currently teaches yoga classes and movement essential workshops online and will return to in person classes as soon as it is safe.
In addition to teaching in group settings, Laurie has a private consultation business called the “Traveling Kinesiologist”. She works one-on-one with clients at their home in hour-long sessions focusing on the specific needs of that individual.  Please email Laurie for more information on working individually: yogaburr@gmail.com
As an avid outdoorswoman, Laurie spends the majority of her “off” time on the trails of the high country where she backpacks with her longtime best friend and husband, Jim.
One of Laurie’s long-time students says, “Laurie’s approach to yoga combines classical teachings with contemporary science in a way that makes asana practice meaningful in the modern world.  With sensitivity and a good sense of humor she blends her deep knowledge of the mechanics of the human body with the traditions of Hatha yoga to provide practices that extend beyond the yoga studio into daily life.
